University of Memphis March Update


  • Upcoming Events
    • Preview Day for High School Juniors: All high school juniors will be invited to campus on Saturday, April 25 for a Preview Day. This is a great event for students who are interested in attending next year. We hope you will spread the word to your students! Invitations will go out in late March.
    • Admitted Student Reception: All admitted freshmen for fall 2015 will be invited to a Class of 2019 Reception on Tuesday, April 7. This is always a high-energy, fun event, and we hope many of your students will be able to attend!

  • Living on Campus: Students can now apply to live on campus for fall 2015. Centennial Place will open in fall 2015 and will feature 24 student apartments and 300 single and double occupancy rooms, and our Helen Hardin Honors Students will have the opportunity to live in our LLC- Honors and Scholars Housing. Additionally, a number of Living Learning Communities are available for students who want to experience the conventional residential experience with support from faculty, integrated resources from sponsoring departments, and a 360-degree approach to student learning.

  • Campus Tours: The University of Memphis offers campus tours each weekday at 9:30am & 1:30pm. Touring campus is the best way for students to know if a university is right for them! Students can sign up online or by calling (901) 678-2169. Tours of our Lambuth campus in Jackson, TN are available on Thursday and Friday each week, and reservations can be made by visiting their web site or calling (731) 425-1964.

  • Exciting News: The University of Memphis’s campus-wide philanthropy Up ‘til Dawn, which raises money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, just announced its total for 2014-2015- $206,811.  We are so proud of our students for their hard work and are celebrating our event being the highest collegiate fundraising event ever for St. Jude. Up ‘til Dawn was founded at the University of Memphis 16 years ago and has spread to over 250 schools nationwide generating nearly $5 million annually for groundbreaking research and lifesaving care at St. Jude. Go Tigers Go!

Updates and Opportunities!

1. The University of Mississippi Pharmacy School is hosting a Pre-Pharmacy Preview Day March 9th at the Thad Cocharan Research Center. You can register online at pharmacy.olemiss.edu/admissions. 2. Summer College at Ole Miss is now accepting applications. Students must have a 3.0 GPA and at least 14 credits to be admitted. The following ACT scholarships are available:
  • 27-29: $1000
  • 30-32: $1500
  • 33-36: $2000

2. Seniors, if you plan on attending MS State in the fall you can start registering for Orientation March 2. Each session has limited seating and sessions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To register for Orientation students must be admitted to MSU and your Immunization Records must be sent to the Student Health Center. You can register online at orientation.msstate.edu. Make sure you have your NetID and a credit card in order to complete your registration.


4. Girls interested in competing in the Miss Olive Branch Pageant should pick up an application in the Guidance Office. The pageant is set for March 28.

Bus Trips
The University of Tennessee Undergraduate Admissions Office will host the annual multicultural bus trip Sneak Peek for interested high school minority Juniors departing from Memphis February 27 & returning February 28, 2015. Veterinary Summer Experience
The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is hosting this eight week program where students will work in a local veterinary practice in their hometown for seven weeks and then spend one week in Knoxville as guests of the veterinary college. Design Matters Camp
The University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design is hosting a week-long summer camp. High school students from around the world can learn innovation and invention skills at our overnight summer camp, Design Matters. The scholarship deadline for this camp is May 15, 2015. UT SCORE Program
The University of Tennessee Undergraduate Admissions Office in Memphis is hosting four consecutive week-long college prep experiences for first generation and/or low-income rising high-school juniors from the Memphis Area in July. The website and deadlines are forthcoming.

Updates from University of Memphis

  • Tiger Scholarship Manager: Admitted students can now apply for departmental and need-based scholarships through our Tiger Scholarship Manager available through admitted students’ MyMemphis portals. The deadline for the scholarships is January 26th and there are many opportunities available.  

  • Emerging Leaders and First Scholars Scholarships: These scholarships require separate applications and have a deadline of February 1stThe Emerging Leaders scholarship is awarded to a limited number of students with demonstrated leadership backgrounds and interest in leadership development programs. A comprehensive application and interview is required, and the scholarship award is $5,500 per year. The First Scholars scholarship is awarded to a limited number of first-generation college students whose parents have no education beyond two years of college. A separate application and student’s FAFSA must be completed by February 1, and the scholarship award is $5,000 per year. Students receiving both the Emerging Leaders and First Scholars scholarships are required to live on campus in designated residence halls as freshmen.

  • First-Generation College Student Resources: In addition to the First Scholars scholarship program, the University has a number of initiatives targeted toward helping first-generation college students adjust to college life at the U of M. A living learning community in our newest residence hall will start this fall in addition to other opportunities for students.   • Exciting News: The University of Memphis Lambuth Campus in Jackson, TN received a $1 Million commitment from Jim and Janet Ayers to be used for initiatives that support students, faculty, programs and facilities. Our Lambuth campus is growing in size and academic programs and may be a good alternative for your students looking for a small college experience at an affordable price.

Scholarships!

Check out a few of the scholarships listed below. As we move further into the semester more local scholarships will become available. You can also check out the Get2College website for a full list of scholarships.


Junior League of Memphis Voluntarism Scholarship
Requirements:
1. Reside in Shelby County or bordering county, including Fayette, Tipton, Crittenden (AR) and
        DeSoto (MS).
2. Be a first-generation college student (neither parent earned more than two years of education       
        beyond high school and no post-secondary degree).
3. Be a female graduating high school senior who is eligible and plans to attend one of the following
       four-year accredited colleges or universities in the year in which the scholarship application is
       submitted:
  • Baptist College of Health Sciences 
  • Christian Brothers University 
  • LeMoyne-Owen College 
  • Memphis College of Art 
  • Rhodes College 
  • The University of Memphis 
Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is  January 30.

The SportQuest Playing With Purpose Scholarship Program

The Playing With Purpose message encourages athletes to serve rather than being served, to lead with humility and engage culture.
 
Criteria:

Applying student athletes must meet ALL of the following criteria:

1. Currently a high school sophomore, junior or senior
2. Maintains a minimum "C" grade average or higher
3. Currently a varsity level athlete in one or more sports
4. A committed follower of Jesus Christ
Apply at www.playingwithpurpose.org. The deadline is February 1.

Tupelo Elvis Fan Club Scholarship

Applicants must:
1. Be a current high school senior.
2. Sing, dance, or play a musical instrument. An MP3 or MP4 recording must be submitted to the selection committee. Semi-finalists will be invited to perform at the Finale in Tupelo. You must perform in order to receive the scholarship.
