1. The University of Mississippi Pharmacy School is hosting a Pre-Pharmacy Preview Day March 9th at the Thad Cocharan Research Center. You can register online at pharmacy.olemiss.edu/admissions. 2. Summer College at Ole Miss is now accepting applications. Students must have a 3.0 GPA and at least 14 credits to be admitted. The following ACT scholarships are available:

• 27-29: $1000
• 30-32: $1500
• 33-36: $2000

2. Seniors, if you plan on attending MS State in the fall you can start registering for Orientation March 2. Each session has limited seating and sessions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To register for Orientation students must be admitted to MSU and your Immunization Records must be sent to the Student Health Center. You can register online at orientation.msstate.edu. Make sure you have your NetID and a credit card in order to complete your registration.


4. Girls interested in competing in the Miss Olive Branch Pageant should pick up an application in the Guidance Office. The pageant is set for March 28.

Bus Trips

The University of Tennessee Undergraduate Admissions Office will host the annual multicultural bus trip Sneak Peek for interested high school minority Juniors departing from Memphis February 27 & returning February 28, 2015. Veterinary Summer Experience

The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is hosting this eight week program where students will work in a local veterinary practice in their hometown for seven weeks and then spend one week in Knoxville as guests of the veterinary college. Design Matters Camp

The University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design is hosting a week-long summer camp. High school students from around the world can learn innovation and invention skills at our overnight summer camp, Design Matters. The scholarship deadline for this camp is May 15, 2015. UT SCORE Program

The University of Tennessee Undergraduate Admissions Office in Memphis is hosting four consecutive week-long college prep experiences for first generation and/or low-income rising high-school juniors from the Memphis Area in July. The website and deadlines are forthcoming.

Updates from University of Memphis

• Tiger Scholarship Manager: Admitted students can now apply for departmental and need-based scholarships through our Tiger Scholarship Manager available through admitted students’ MyMemphis portals. The deadline for the scholarships is January 26^th and there are many opportunities available.  

• Emerging Leaders and First Scholars Scholarships: These scholarships require separate applications and have a deadline of February 1^st.  The Emerging Leaders scholarship is awarded to a limited number of students with demonstrated leadership backgrounds and interest in leadership development programs. A comprehensive application and interview is required, and the scholarship award is $5,500 per year. The First Scholars scholarship is awarded to a limited number of first-generation college students whose parents have no education beyond two years of college. A separate application and student’s FAFSA must be completed by February 1, and the scholarship award is $5,000 per year. Students receiving both the Emerging Leaders and First Scholars scholarships are required to live on campus in designated residence halls as freshmen.

• First-Generation College Student Resources: In addition to the First Scholars scholarship program, the University has a number of initiatives targeted toward helping first-generation college students adjust to college life at the U of M. A living learning community in our newest residence hall will start this fall in addition to other opportunities for students. • Campus Tours: The University of Memphis offers campus tours each weekday at 9:30am & 1:30pm. Touring campus is the best way for students to know if a university is right for them! Students can sign up online or by calling (901) 678-2169. Tours of our Lambuth campus in Jackson, TN are available on Thursday and Friday each week, and reservations can be made by visiting their web site or calling (731) 425-1964.

• Exciting News: The University of Memphis Lambuth Campus in Jackson, TN received a $1 Million commitment from Jim and Janet Ayers to be used for initiatives that support students, faculty, programs and facilities. Our Lambuth campus is growing in size and academic programs and may be a good alternative for your students looking for a small college experience at an affordable price.

Dual Enrollment Opportunities for Second Semester

First semester is almost complete! For the next few weeks we will be involved in some type of testing so please make sure your student is at school and prepared for their test. These tests (Biology, English 10, Algebra, and US History) are required for graduation.  If you have questions about these tests please contact me or your student's teacher.


As we get ready to move into the second semester, please take a minute to look at the information about Dual Enrollment. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to get a jump start on college credit.

Dual Enrollment Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be a junior or senior
• 3.0 GPA

Admission Requirements:

• Completed Northwest Transcript
• Official High School Transcript
• Letter of Recommendation from Counselor

Lewisburg High School is offering four different Dual Enrollment classes. All classes will be taught at Lewisburg one afternoon a week from 3:30-6. The following classes will be offered:

Monday-English Composition II (must have English Comp I completed)
Tuesday-English Composition I (must have 17 or higher in English on ACT)
Wednesday-American History
Thursday-College Algebra (must have 19 or higher in Math on ACT)

The cost of each course is $220. Checks should be made out to Lewisburg High School. If you are interested in any of these classes, please talk to Mrs. Brown before Christmas break.


There are also Dual Enrollment courses available at Northwest DeSoto. Follow this link for a full list of course offerings. The same requirements apply to classes at Northwest DeSoto, however, the cost is not the same. Again, if you are interested in these course, please talk to Mrs. Brown as soon as possible.

Princeton Review and Recommendation Letters

The Princeton Review just published their list of colleges with the happiest students. These ratings are based on surveys taken by thousands of college students. Check out the article in the Huffington Post or see the full list by creating an account with the Princeton Review.

Juniors (and some seniors) if you need help narrowing down your college search take a minute to create an account with the Princeton Review. They have several "lists" broken down by academics, campus life, athletics, administration, politics, social scene, anything you could imagine! This is a great resource especially if you are looking at schools outside of Mississippi.

The Princeton Review also offers free online ACT prep classes. The next class is November 19. They offer one class each month. This is a great option if you cannot make the classes offered at the Get2College center in Southaven. The Get2College Center offers subject area intensive classes the week leading up to the ACT. Check out their schedule at Get2College.org

Finally, recommendation letter season is upon us. If you need a letter of recommendation from me these are the steps you will need to take:
1. Request a letter from me, preferably via email at least one week in advance.
2. Provide me with a copy of your resume and fill out the Jr/Sr Survey. I will email you the link after you request your letter.
3. Be prepared to give me details about the scholarship or program to which you are applying. Committees don't want me to re-write your resume; they want to know specifics about you and how your involvement has made the school/community a better place. Below are four questions I use to write your recommendation letters:

• How does this student balance academic achievement with school and community involvement?
• What is the one accomplishment, qualification or quality that sets this student apart from his/her peers?
• How has the student's school involvement made an impact on CHHS?
• How has the student's community involvement made an impact on the Olive Branch area?
